Seriously in the dumps, Eddie is taken for a drink by his ex-wife’s brash and apparently successful brother Vernon (Johnny Whitworth). Eddie hands over the money by the fountains on 6th Avenue at 50th Street. Like many of  Phillip K. Dick’s great  stories, this film uses science fiction to study addiction, morality and our roles in society. He wrote and directed the film “King's Highway." The clearly multi-talented Tom Ford, credited here with designing Bradley Cooper’s suits, is also director of the highly-regarded A Single Man and Nocturnal Animals. It’s a credit to Cooper’s talent that we do stay on Eddie’s side as he takes us on his journey. Briefly back to Manhattan, Gennady hands over the bag of cash on a bench in Union Square. It doesn’t end well with Eddie throwing up (literally, as the camera angle has it) outside on South Broad Street. Burn Notice is not the smartest show ever. Also, the film takes absurd shortcuts, like Eddie telling a scientist he’ll pay $2 million to re-create NZT. Things just keep getting grander. Dirty dishes piled in the sink. It’s a dire situation and Eddie isn’t going to let them get him. The opinions expressed on Popdose are his own and do not reflect those of his employer. Vernon explains, “You know how we only use 20% of our brains? One call activates the phone of a sinister figure sitting on a nearby bench, referred to as ‘Man in Tan Coat’. How did it get to this point? In a city of millions, Eddie has a chance encounter with his ex-brother-in-law, Vernon (Johnny Whitworth), a former drug dealer now peddling for a pharmaceutical company. Meanwhile, he tries to keep his addiction to NZT at bay while he works with Robert De Niro’s character, Carl Van Loon, a mega mogul, to broker the largest merger in corporate history. There’s also no help from the supporting cast. This is  star making performance, one that proves that Cooper can carry a film. He eventually comes to his senses in the early morning at the viewing area on Brooklyn Bridge. © 2020 Collider Cryptomedia, Inc. All Rights Reserved. Limitless is a thrilling, inventive joyride that should provide plenty of escapist fun this weekend, just in time to brush off the winter doldrums and welcome in the spring. In the coda to this version, Eddie meets up with Lindy and shows off his mastery of Mandarin in smart Pan-Asian restaurant Sampan, 124 South 13th Street, Philadelphia, PA 19107 (tel: 215-732-3501). The narration is professorial, which in turn casts the viewer as the student. By the way, if you watch the film on DVD, choose the original, darker and more ambiguous ending. What’s the betting it will have dire side effects? Neil Burger’s Limitless never manages this task. The film’s dizzying ‘infinite zoom’ whooshes along Madison Avenue past Campbell’s Funeral Parlor, 1076 Madison Avenue (several times) – the place for a celeb send-off seen in The First Wives Club and Woody Allen’s Everyone says I Love You. The results are startling as he finds himself confidently sweet-talking his landlord’s wife, jogging along the East River waterfront beneath the Manhattan Bridge and completing the book he’d been struggling with. Vernon is testing NZT, a new drug supposedly FDA approved that taps into the human brain and allows the user to access the full potential of their mind. My favorite is the seemingly miles and miles film used to capture a single take that covers three city blocks. NZT’s side-effects start to kick in big time as Eddie finds himself suddenly uptown on New York’s Fifth Avenue outside the Metropolitan Museum of Art. There’s plenty of visual flare, but it feels more like distraction than thoughtful support for its story. Well, sort of. The supporting cast is top notch. While Cooper once nailed the everyman role on Alias, it’s a part that no longer suits him. ... but these are minor complaints for a film as entertaining as this one. Back to the real NY, Lindy swallows a pill and in no time at all is on Central Park’s Wollman Skating Rink between East 62nd and 63rd Streets, turning a little girl’s blades into a lethally defensive weapon. In the preposterously grand environs of the Union Trust Steakhouse, 717 Chestnut Street, Philadelphia, Eddie impresses the business crowd with his insight enough to get an offer of work in the world of finance. The crazy jaunt was filmed at Puerto Vallarta, Bahia de Banderas, on the western coast of Mexico. Burger deserves credit for at least attempting to give Limitless a pulse, but he never gives the movie a clever beat. Limitless (2015–2016) Series Cast & Crew. Remembering his remaining stash is hidden in Lindy’s apartment, Eddie is obliged to tell her all and ask her to bring him his fix. His memoir, “Basement Songs,” is available in paperback and Kindle. Lead actor Bradley Cooper tries to make the most of his performance, but he lacks the everyman charm that would provide his character with some much-needed sympathy. The supporting cast is top notch. [kml_flashembed movie="" width="600" height="344" allowfullscreen="true" fvars="fs=1" /], Scott Malchus is a writer, filmmaker and die hard Cleveland Indians fan. Although set almost entirely in New York, the film was based at Philadelphia Soundstages, 1600 North 5th Street, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and much of it was filmed around the city. Later, when Eddie begins to recognize the harmful side effects of NZT and he begins to lose portions of time, blacking out, Burger seamlessly moves Eddie from scene to scene in cuts that feel organic, but also have a jarring effect once we (and Eddie) realize that he’s not in the same place, or even the same time of day. The steakhouse used to be the Striped Bass restaurant, where Bruce Willis had dinner with his strangely silent wife in M Night Shyamalan’s The Sixth Sense. When you take NZT, you see the world more clearly and you’re more focused. As Eddie attacks Wall Street and begins to make millions, insanely difficult equations play out as flipping tiles on the ceiling. But when his long-suffering girlfriend Lindy (Abbie Cornish) breaks up with him, it’s in Philadelphia. Flashback to a long haired, scruffier Eddie, slouched over and barely making ends meet. In a frank, matter of fact manner, Eddie begins to tell us. Limitless lacks that cleverness and creativity and as a result we’re not drawn into Eddie’s story. A bad deal he made with a Russian loan shark (Andrew Howard) haunts him throughout the story; a man in tan coat (Thomas Arana) seems to be stalking him with a concealed knife in his jacket; and the police suspect that Eddie had something to do with the murder of a beautiful socialite. We’re led to believe that Eddie can figure out the intricacies of anything in a short amount of time, so why doesn’t Eddie just study chemistry and reverse-engineer NZT on his own? Here, director Burger begins employing a series of visual elements that place us inside Eddie’s brain. Limitless is a thrilling, ... little pieces of information that help him out of a jam with his landlord’s wife and into her bed. Out of desperation, Eddie swallows the clear tablet of NZT and his world changes. This is a protected nature reserve so visitation is limited. Eddie is a writer, living off a book advance and the goodwill of his gorgeous, understanding girlfriend, Lindy (Abbie Cornish). She breaks up with Eddie and does her best not to call him a loser. Throughout the film, I couldn’t help but compare the direction of Limitless to the TV show Burn Notice. Instead, Burger’s imagination into Eddie’s hyper-intelligence extends to over-saturating the color palette and a few clever visual effects. His family is heavily involved in fund raising to find a cure for cystic fibrosis. There are interesting ideas swirling at the edges of Limitless. Eddie gets his little helpers, survives an attack by Gennady and his gang and ‘12 months later’ is making good his ambitions by running for the Senate in 'New York'. The inanity of the plot is made worse by the vapidity of Morra’s character. Eddie ignores the occasional blackout to impress bigtime mogul Van Loon (Robert De Niro) in the pillared and scarlet-draped grandeur of Del Frisco's, 1426-1428 Chestnut Street, Philadelphia. Like any good pusher, legal or otherwise, Vernon offers a free sample to Eddie. The sci-fi drama is a showcase for Bradley Cooper, one of the stars of The Hangover, as well as supporting roles in a number of movies, and director Neal Burger, who had success with his magicians thriller, The Illusionist, but saw his excellent follow-up, The Lucky Ones, get squandered by its studio and sent directly to video. This is one movie that could benefit from word of mouth; hopefully, audiences will head to the theater to see it, as it’s a great way to spend 100 minutes. But Limitless ignores these opportunities and never builds to anything thoughtful or provocative. Of course, Eddie's apartment has to be the real New York.
